Two climbers from the UK used theirs to get rescued off Mont Blanc as the weather closed in. They texted friends back home and the rescue services arrived.
Finn McCann and Tom Greenwood were trapped on the Italian side of the mountain as a predicted storm closed in.
One of them was injured.
As the battery power on the phone went down they contacted friends in the UK who were able to alert the emergency services.
One of them had a dislocated left shoulder and despite being experienced climbers they recognised the need to call for help.
For more details on their dramatic rescue story see here.
The moral of the story seems to be to have your phone with you and make sure you have the local rescue service numbers keyed into the phone.
Better still might be to study the forecast.
