What's in a name?
Monday August 23, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

The Canyons in Utah is to become Canyons. It's been called a few other names in its past too. It's just been taken over and things are changing.

The resort has always been slightly in the shadow of its posh neighbour, Deer Valley and the better know resort of Park City that hosts the Sundance film festival each year and which certainly has a livelier reputation.

Here at PlanetSKI we have always been slightly puzzled as to why because the skiing is good at (the) Canyons and the tree skiing on a powder day is some of the best in the state.

Some of the back bowls are pretty good too.

We haven't skied there for a few years but when we last did we found it one of the best areas around.

The new owners are making much of the name change and putting in some new lifts too.

The pull-down hood has an orange tint for maximum visibility.

So, is it just a new name and an orange chairlift?

No.

300 acres of new terrain with ten new ski runs created will be located off the new lift. These runs will range from intermediate to expert levels and bring the total number of runs to 176.

Other improvements include moving and renovating the resorts gondola to improve skier flow from the car park, enhancing snowmaking on the lower mountain with a new 20-million-gallon reservoir above Lookout Peak for snowmaking water and the creation of a Ski Beach at the base of the slopes for après ski activities.

Changes are afoot at (the) Canyons.
