Olympic ski jumper jailed for assault

The Finnish athlete, Matti Nykanen, has been found guilty of attacking his wife with a knife. The attack happened on Christmas day 2009 in a domestic feud.
The 47-year old former Olympic champion was convicted of assault by a court in Finland. He had pleaded not guilty.
He was sentenced to 16 months in jail.
We reported on the incident that took place on Xmas day last year.
He has since been divorced from his wife, Mervi Tapola, who suffered multiple stab wounds in the attack.
Nykanen has a history of domestic abuse and his wife claimed she thought she was going to die in the assault when he grabbed a kitchen knife as the couple argued.
She had multiple stab wounds.
He was also fined and ordered to pay her legal costs.
In the 1988 Calgary Olympics in Canada Nykanen won three gold medals and he took another gold medal four years earlier. He was world Champion four times.
In 2006 he was found guilty of another assault on is wife.
He is reported to be appealing against the sentence.
