Rescue package for UK's longest dry slope
Friday August 27, 2010 - Email this article to a friend
Councillors in Scotland will debate a rescue plane for the Hillend slope today, Friday. 27,000 people have signed an online petition to keep it open.
The slope, at the Midlothian Sports Centre above Edinburgh, has been loosing around half a million pounds a year and is faced with closure.
Now a rescue package has been put together that would require £600,000 from SportScotland and the selling off of some nearby land to property developers.
We have already reported on the problems facing the ski slope here on PlanetSKI
It has historic roots to British skiing and many Olympic racers have trained at the slope and now support the campaign to keep it open.
It is 400m long and opened in 1965. It even has its own chairlift.
Savings have already been made with reduced staffing costs and increased revenue.
A report by the Midlothian Council believes the centre could make a profit within 2 years.
We will let you know the result of the council meeting later this week.
