British skier appointed to FIS
Wednesday August 25, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

The Captain of the British telemark team, Andrew Clarke, has become the chair of the telemark committee. FIS is the governing body of world snowsports competition and it puts him in an influential position.

Clarke says his priority in the role will be to raise the profile of telemarking and ultimately he wants to see  the discipline included in The Winter Olympics.

He also wants to make it more appealing and accessible to young skiers.

Great aims but how does he propose to do it?

Clarke is a PlanetSKI reader and often sends us in articles about telemark skiing that we are very happy to publish.

Soon we will be bringing you a 3-part blog from a telemark ski guide who attempted the Haute route from Chamonix to Zermatt but it turned in to an altogether different experience.

We will be putting it up next week

We have also published an article from him on his philosophy and views and an article from a member of the team, and another good friend of PlanetSKI.

He takes over on FIS from the Frenchman, Andre Favre.

Clarke; big ambitionsClarke; big ambitions"In the last four years, our discipline has been growing and attracting attention on a global level. Several nations have shown an interest to get involved at the Committee level. The Czech Republic is on the Committee as of this year and Japan has submitted a request for membership to the Council," Clarke says.

"We have also been able to make improvements to the calendar; Great Britain ran its first World Cup race in Austria and is hoping to do it again next year. With Méribel staging its first ever Telemark World Cup event, we were able to break into bigger venue locations.

I believe that in a few years we will attract more interest from the sponsors as well as TV coverage if we keep making the sport more spectator-friendly. It must be easy for the spectator to follow at every level of the competition. It will also be important to continue to get more people involved and interested in the sport, especially the younger generations."

Clarke provided us, here on PlanetSKI, with updates from the British World Cup race in Austria.

We wish him the very best of luck in his new role.
