Drugs ring busted in Oz ski resorts
Wednesday September 1, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

10 people were arrested in co-ordinated raids in Perisher and Thredbo. 80 police officers were involved in a year-long covert operation. In a separate operation road-side checks caused anger on a powder day as people were delayed.

Of the ten arrested in the drugs raids six were seasonal workers and four local people.

It's believed they supplied drugs to a large number of people in the ski resorts.

Amphetamine, ecstasy, cocaine and cannabis were allegedly seized in the raids.

For more information and details see this story in The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

It's thought more people could be arrested in connection with the operation.

In a further, and unrelated, operation over the weekend the police in Canberra angered many skiers and snowboarders as they carried out random road-side drink and drug tests on drivers.

It made many people frustrated, as it was one the best weekends of the winter with fresh snow, and the tests caused huge delays.

There were delays of up to two hours.

The police conducted 180 random tests over the weekend. Only three people were found to be over the limit.

Four vehicles were found to have been in an unroad-worthy condition.

As well as the skiers and snowboarders stopped or stuck in traffic jams, the local businesses on Snowy Mountain also voiced concern as they lost custom.

The police have defended their actions saying that in the long-run it makes the roads safer for everyone and that alcohol is a factor in many roads accidents.

Maybe, but it must have been pretty frustrating for many with such good conditions.
