Bansko gets environmental checks
Wednesday September 1, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

The Bulgarian ski resort has been inspected by government officials to check it hasn't broken environmental rules. Some claim it is bigger than it should be and many, many trees have been chopped down.

Satellite pictures apparently show that the ski area is larger than permitted with more tress having been felled than necessary or that were allowed.

Now the government has hired in an independent company to measure the area and produce findings.

Environmentalists have long accused the resort, and others, of flouting international regulations and that some of the development is illegal.

We have already reported on the issue on PlanetSKI with further background information to the ongoing story.

Part of the Bansko Ski Area is within the Pirin National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the past the government has stopped some work on ski lifts from going ahead as they were deemed to be in the wrong place.

Last spring tens of thousands of people demonstrated about other developements going on at ski resorts in the country claiming they were illegal.

We reported on it at the time.

We will let you know the results of the latest tests when we get them.
