Happy hour ban in Swiss bars
Tuesday August 31, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

All bars in Swiss ski resorts could be forced to stop having happy hours, 2 for 1 drinks offers and ladies' nights at certain times over the weekend. It comes amid growing concern of rising levels of alcohol consumption.

The Federal Government has floated the idea as worries grow across the country, not just in ski resorts, about the large amounts of alcohol being drunk.

Already these promotions apply only to wine and beer and there are restrictions on spirits.

The proposal is to ban all such promotions between the hours of 9pm and 9am on a Friday and Saturday night in an attempt to reduce binge drinking.

Some have criticised the move while others say it does not go far enough.

Groups against excessive drinking point out that the promotions can run before 9am and on all other days of the week and have called for stricter rules.

The main target for the new law would appear to be bars in city centres, but they would also affect bars in the country's ski resorts.
