Heli skiing heaven
Monday October 25, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

The world's first Heliski show takes place in London this week. Everything you ever wanted to know about heliskiing. Even if it is out of your price range the event should be fun. Check out the videos in this story and dream.

The Heliskishow is being organised by Total Heliski and has found a venue fitting the subject; a 5* hotel overlooking Battersea Heliport in West London.

The BBC's Graham Bell will be there along with the No 1 British female ski racer, Chemmy Alcott, and the mountaineer, Kenton Cool.

"There is no better feeling in the world, when the helicopter pulls away leaving you on top of a powder field so fresh and deep you'll need a snorkel to breathe. Time to shred some lines and take some face shots," enthuses Graham Bell.

He is of course right but there are some concerns over its environmental credentials and of course it is not cheap.

Far from it.

There will also be some information about cat-skiing too, which is often seen as a poor man's heli-skiing.

It may well be but here at PlanetSKI one of the best days one of our editors ever had in the mountains was cat-skiing in Fernie, Canada.

There will be information about heliskiing from experts who know the best areas across the world.

Expect some pretty good videos too.

There will be drinks, canapés and a host of other temptations too.

One lucky person will get the chance to arrive in a helicopter with Chemmy Alcott.  For details of the free-to enter competition see here.

About to board, no better feelingAbout to board, no better feelingSo, who exactly is Total Heliski?

It is a new company puling together, what it believes are, some of the best heliski operations in the world.

"Heliskiing is for people who have skied the rest and now want to ski the best. We are going to take you above and beyond at The London Total Heliski Show creating opportunities to meet the experts, and mingle with similar skiers and boarders in an exciting, yet intimate, luxury setting," says the CEO of Total Heliski, Hayley Melidonis.

The event costs £25 and is ticket only.  The tickets were originally priced at £75 but the organsiers dropped the admissin fee to get more people to attend.  PlanetSKI will be there and we'll let you know how it all goes.

You can get tickets for the event here.

If you are tempted then take a look at some of the heliski videos below from one of Total Heliski's operators, Bella Coola Helisport.

It operates out of British Columbia, Canada.

Total Heliski works with its promotional partners including Ellis Brigham, Tourism  BC, Salomon, Hotel Verta, Arc'teryx and Black Diamond.
