Mountain lunches get expensive
Tuesday March 10, 2009 - Email this article to a friend

With the poor exchange rate and high prices lunch has now become an expensive affair for British skiers. We have a video and report.

It’s the first conversation on most people’s lips out in the Alps as lunch has become extremely pricey. “I used to eat out all the time in mountain restaurants but now it is just too expensive to do it for a whole week,” says PlanetSKi reader Andrew Storey.

Another, Mike Marigold, who is in the Swiss Alps agrees.  “I am out here with my wife and 2 children so lunch out is just a cost too far, so we have taken to buying something from the supermarket and eating it up the mountains.”

Take a look at the video below for the options on offer.  Here at PlanetSKI we believe more resorts should offer decent picnic facilities for skiers and snow boarders.

As mentioned in the video Chamonix offers picnic facilites in some of its restaurants.

Restaurant at Charamillon has picnic facilitiesRestaurant at Charamillon has picnic facilitiesSpecial areas are set aside at Plan Joran on the Grands Montets ski area, at Charamillon in the Balme area and at the Flégère.

In France there is also a law that all restaurants have to offer drinking water free of charge.  So if you forego a beer, glass of wine or soft drink then that is one area where you can save some money.

Some resorts in Austria and Italy offer picnic facilities too but they are few and far between.

Anecdotal evidence suggests the cost of lunch is beginning to annoy holiday-makers as there is limited choice and perhaps this is something the resorts should look at.

If you want to save a few pounds then take a look at our latest offers of deals and discounts which have some half price holidays on offer and also the PlanetSKI guide to cutting the costs of skiing.
