Snowtrain for Switzerland
Thursday January 27, 2011 - Email this article to a friend

This weekend a new service starts from Geneva airport to many popular ski resorts. It is a special service designed to deliver you straight to your resort with information and entertainment on board.

There are ski instructors, ski computer games and massage chairs. Or you can just have a drink in the bar and watch the mountains get ever closer.

The train runs from this Saturday, January 29th, to 19th March 2011 and will depart from Geneva airport at 13.40 each Saturday.

It only stops stations that are connected to ski resorts like Aigle, Martigny, Sion, Visp and Brig.

It runs a few minutes ahead of a mainline train so it connects to all transfer services up the mountain.

The resorts served by the service include Villars, the ski areas of the Portes du Soleil, Verbier, Nendaz, Crans-Montana, Grimentz, Leukerbad, Zermatt and Saas-Fee.

"It was very difficult working out the timetable as the rail system is already very full, but we have managed it," says Simon Mouttet.

"We chose the time of departure as this is the one that links in with most of the arriving flights from the UK."

Before setting off from Geneva it originates from Zurich first thing in the morning and will take Swiss people from the city to the ski resorts accessed via the Rhone Valley.

The ticket costs the same as the normal transfer ticket and you will need to make a reservation.

However it is worth pointing out that for some of the ski resorts closer to Geneva it can be cheaper simply to buy standard ticket.

For the ones with a longer journey like Zermatt and Saas-Fee the Transfer Ticket is cheaper.
