Czech Republic links to Austria
Tuesday January 17, 2012 - Email this article to a friend
A ski lift is planned but not everyone wants it. Plans to build lift between the Czech Republic and Austria have been criticised by environmental groups.
The funicular railway would go to the Austrian ski area of Hochficht.
The project was given the go ahead by the Czech Republic's Environment Minister earlier this month.
It is part of a new draft zoning law for the country's UNESCO recognised Umava National Park.
However it goes against the findings of an environmental impact assessment.
The new lift and runs at Hraniník would have a 3km wide operating area which the minister feels will mean minimal disruption to the park as a whole.
70,000 Czechs visit Hochficht each year.
Apparently President Václav Klaus, who is said to be a keen skier, wants to be the first on the new lift.
If it goes ahead.
