$83,000 to protect Obama ski trip
Monday July 23, 2012 - Email this article to a friend

Michelle Obama took her two daughters to Aspen last February and the taxpayer footed the security bill.

According to US media reports the total price of the holiday to the US tax payer was at least $83,182.99.

The biggest cost was $48,950.38 for Secret Service protection, that included accommodation at the Fasching Haus deluxe condominium and the Inn at Aspen.

The cost of transportation was also hefty.

The organisation Judicial Watch estimated that the flights cost $22,583.70. This didn't include in-flight purchases costing $235.44. The cost of rental cars was $6,442.23. They used the Department of Defence hourly rates.

Judicial Watch received the information after making a legal request against the US Air Force and Secret Service.

We reported on her family ski trip at the time on PlanetSKI.

"The costs of the Obama family ski weekend are staggering. These high-priced luxury vacations, and the lack of transparency about them, are beginning to seem like an abuse of office," said the Judicial Watch President, Tom Fitton, to US media.

The First Lady and her daughters went to Beaver Creek the year before as we reported at the time here on PlanetSKI.
