The next Lindsey Vonn?
Monday December 24, 2012 - Email this article to a friend

The 17-year old US skier, Mikaela Shiffrin, has won her first World Cup victory and already people are liking her to her heroine, Lindsey Vonn. PlanetSKI spotted her potential and caught up with Mikaela last winter at the US European training camp in Austria.

In Are in Sweden in the slalom she beat the World Cup current leader, Tina Maze, and the local girl, Frida Hansdotter.

"It wasn't two perfect runs but it was two fast runs. I couldn't imagine what winning would feel like. I only knew the feeling of knowing you've skied your best," said Mikaela Shiffrin after her famous victory. "My only focus is just to ski my best every day. I'll be happy with a World Championship medal or a 15th place, as long as I'm skiing my best."

She becomes the third youngest American to win a World Cup victory after Kiki Cutter and Judy Nagel.

Lindsey Vonn had to wait untill she was 20 to gain her first victory.

Already people are talking about her in the same terms as Vonn, though it is perhaps a bit premature.

She first hit the headlines in December 2011 with a third place podium finish in the slalom in Lienze in Austria.

Here at PlanetSKI we caught up with Mikaela last winter when we visited the US training camp in Solden, Austria.

She spoke with James Cove in one of our "PlanetSKI Chairlift chats......."

The US Team is based in Obergurgl and Solden, in the Austrian Tirol, for the winter racing season and see here for more information on our trip to meet them.

Mikaela has now returned to the family home in Vail Colorado for Christmas and will be back racing a giant slalom in Semmering, Austria on December 28th and 29th.

It will be fascinating to see how she performs.

Below are some images we took of Mikaela training in Austria last winter.
