Tragedy on K2
Thursday June 25, 2009 - Email this article to a friend
We have unconfirmed reports that the climbing partner of Fredrik Ericsson has died. The Italian, Michele Fait, was trying to climb up and ski down the mountain. Fredrik has been writing a blog for us on PlanetSKI.
Michele apparently slipped while training for the climb on K2 while the pair were getting acclimatised and fell hundreds of metres to his death.
Only 2 days ago we received this latest update from Fredrik.
“His skis slipped on a sheet of ice and then hit some rocks, catapulting him down to the base of the wall. More than a thousand meters left no chance for survival,” according to Vinicio Stefanello, editor of PlanetMountain.com.
Other mountaineers on K2 have written on their blogs about the tragic accident, but we have had no official confirmation from Fredrik.
We will bring you further news when we get it.
Below is a picture of Michele as he prepared to set off to K2.
