Snow leopard has twin cubs
Thursday July 2, 2009 - Email this article to a friend
Twin snow leopard cubs have been born in captivity at the Welsh Mountain Zoo. The animals are quite beautiful.
They were born 4 weeks ago but have been kept out of the public eye to ensure they bond correctly with their mother.
It is believed there are only 4,000 of the animals in the world and the 2 new additions are part of a specialist European breeding programme.
Both the mother and father were born in captivity in other European zoos.
The twin cubs have not yet been named as the keepers are unsure of their sex at the moment and when they finally go on show to the general public they are sure to be the star attraction of the zoo.
Not always cuddlySnow leopards are slightly smaller than other big cats and live in the mountains of Central Asia. They have thick fur on their stocky bodies to prevent heat loss and they have wide feet to help them walk on the snow.
They also have thick tales which help for balance and they also wrap it around their head, like a blanket, when they are asleep to help preserve heat.
The animlas are endangered and for more information on these fascinating creatures see here.
