Forest fire at Whistler
Saturday August 1, 2009 - Email this article to a friend

A lightening strike caused a fire that threatened some of the venues for next winter’s Olympic games. They all escaped damage in the end.

Hundreds of people were evacuated and seven air tankers, several helicopters and ground crews were used to bring the blaze under control.

The fire was on Blackcomb mountain where the bobsled, luge and skeleton events are to be held next February.  None of the infrastructure was damaged.

There have been several forest fires in the surrounding area as there has been a recent heatwave and very little rain so the ground is very dry.

At the height of the blaze thick clouds of smoke billowed up from the  mountain.
