Ski prices slashed for Xmas
Friday October 30, 2015 - Email this article to a friend

Some ski holidays at Christmas will be cheap this year; we have seen one for under £300. There also reductions in air fares. UPDATED

Prices are being cut by the tour operators as demand stalls.

The latest offers we have over the festive season come from the tour operator, Ski Amis.

It goes to many of the major ski areas in the French Alps.

People seem concerned about snow after last year, the main transfer day of Saturday is also Boxing Day, the travel chaos in parts of the French Alps last year over the festive period is fresh in people's minds and perhaps people just want to be at home rather than on slopes.

This has led to some serious price reductions.

And we mean serious.

The cost of spending Christmas Day on the ski slopes has hit a record low with a half board week including flights and transfers on offer for under £300 and a fully catered chalet holiday for £499.

That might well be cheaper than staying at home.

The UK's leading ski agent, Iglu, which sells holidays for over 50 tour operators covering 200 resorts and is a partner of PlanetSKI, was this week offering catered holidays for Christmas week in Bulgaria for £292, Andorra for £348 and a choice of Italy, Austria and France from £416.

"'A crucial factor is that Easter is early this year so the snow is guaranteed and the days then are longer and warmer', said Iglu's sales director, Adam Johnson.

"Also I'm afraid a lot of people haven't forgotten the nightmare of transfer day last year when a massive dump closed resorts and roads and some Brits were trapped in coaches or airports for 24 hours," he added.

See here for a PlanetSKI report on the travel delays from last year.

"I've been in this business for 12 years and I've never known such widespread and early discounting. Many holidays are down in price by at least a third and in some have almost halved."

"Some people spend more on a Christmas break at home than the price of some of these holidays for a whole week's skiing," he added.

One operator we have spoken to says it is even prepared to mothball chalets over Christmas and it may even be more economical simply to not open.

And the latest offers we have are on flights.  One of our partners,, has some discounted offers over the holiday period.

"As with all operators our December sales are a bit on the slow side. However the rest of the season is going really well. We are seeing strong growth this year which suggest a lot of clients are still self-packaging - booking one of our ski flights and then booking independent chalets/apartments," said David Lacy from Ski-Flights.

"Families seem to be booking only at half-term or Easter. Outside of these weeks most of our sales are to adults (lots of groups) or to families with pre-school children. Our average client age is definitely getting older and our older guests avoid the school holidays so we are seeing good sales in January and March," he added.

Ski-Flights has added a number of extra flights at half-term to meet demand and has added its first extra flights to Chambery at Easter from Gatwick and Stansted.

It reports that sales to both France and Austria continue to be strong but says there is a slight swing back to France from Austria.

Happy ChristmasHappy Christmas
