Friday February 19, 2016 - Email this article to a friend

New lifts will join St Anton with Lech and will be in place for next winter. It will make it the largest linked ski area in Austria and one of the largest in the Alps. UPDATED

It has been talked about for many years and now it is about to happen.

In the past, unless you were an expert skier, then a bus was required to ski the whole area.

It will give 305kms of ski pistes served by 87 lifts.

There will be four new lifts including a main lift, The Flexenbahn, linking Stuben and Zurs.

It will be a 10-person gondola with a capacity will be 2,400 people per hour.

The journey will be 6 minutes.

A 1.8km piste with a descent of 562 vertical metres will also be created.

In addition there will be some extra chairlifts - The Trittkopfbahn I and II, and the new Albonabahn II.

There have been some significant new linking lifts in Austria in recent years.

This season Fieberbrunn and Saalbach-Hintergelmm were joined - we visted this season.

And a couple of years ago the Arlberg area was made larger with a lift between Lech and Warth-Schrocken; we were there for its official opening.

The new development in the Arlberg will cost €45m.

Although not as large as the huge areas of France such as Les3Vallees, Le Portes du Soleil and the Paradiski area it will rival them.

The largest ski area in the Alps remains the Dolomiti Super Ski region in Italy.

Some ski resorts and areas claim larger numbers than they actually have - see here for an earlier PlanetSKI article on the subject.
