Healthy alternatives in Val Thorens

The high altitude French resort in Les3Vallees is offering a range of health and fitness activities to complement the skiing. NEW

Snowshoeing and Yoga Hike:  the mountains are an ideal place in which to relax and recharge your batteries.

What could be better than a snowshoeing session that combines gentle walking with pranayama yoga (breathing exercises) to get a breath of fresh air and calm your mind?

Brigitte, a mountain leader, and Anita, a yoga instructor, start the snowshoe hike with a stretching session, later incorporating two breaks including a sun salutation and seated meditation.

Ski fitness is to ski touring what jogging is to running; a cardio activity carried out wearing lightweight clothing, close-fitting trousers and a thin jacket.

Armed with water and a stopwatch, you're off, burning calories as you go! Ski tourers, more and more of whom are to be found in Val Thorens, now have a dedicated safe run open daily from 7am and 9am, and from 5pm to 8pm.

Free access Free taster session: every Tuesday between 7am and 8.30am, the Mountain Office runs group sessions offering useful advice on technique and cardio training for beginners who've always wanted to give it a go.

Dynafit Ski Leopard Track Sessions:  led by Val Thorens pioneers, this walk begins at dusk with an hour of climbing interspersed with stories about the history of the resort.

It is rounded off with a glass of mulled wine and a bowl of French onion soup at the Chalet de la Marine.

The journey back down takes place under the stars. A unique experience to share with locals who love their mountains.

Val Thorens' new 5-star hotel, Le Pashmina, offers a Brunch & Spa package from €95.

It includes a 30, 60 or 90-minute treatments as well as the use of the 400m2 Occitane spa which has a swimming pool, a sauna, steam room, as well as indoor and outdoor hot tub.

The brunch is served between 11.30am and 2pm at the hotel's restaurant the Base Camp.

Val Thorens also has several trails for hikers and snowshoers.

The 2 Lacs path is 2.1 km long and takes around 1 hour and a half.

The Montagnettes path is a two-kilometre stroll that takes you from the heart of Val Thorens to Les Menuires .

The Moutiere path is for serious hikers as it is 6.1 km long and can take up to 5 hours.

The Marine path is new for this season. 

Hikers need to take the Cascades chair lift and can walk down from the top of the lift. It takes around 1 hour to descend 5km.

Val Thorens, Europe's highest resort, is open until 8 May 2016.
