24-hours in Innsbruck - James Cove, Innsbruck

The capital of the Tirol is perhaps the best place for us skiers and snowboarders to have a city break. Why?

As my train drew into Innsbruck main station and I stepped outside I didn't know whether to look at the architecture or the snow-capped mountains that tower over the city.

So I looked at both.

But it was Nordkette that drew my view - a ski area accessed from a lift in the centre of Innsbruck.

It is a bit like having a ski lift in London's Trafalgar Square that goes to a 2,256m peak just south of the River Thames - journey time from city centre to the slopes is 20-minutes.

Wandering round Innsbruck skiers and snowboarders blend in with the city crowds.

Innsbruck is the perfect place for a city break - there are museums, galleries and medieval architecture in abundance.

As a student city there are numerous bars, clubs and hedonistic spots.

And as a major tourist destination there are dozens of restaurants to chose from.

If it is shopping you are after then it has plenty on offer.

It is also steeped in alpine history with its Olympic heritage.

As I set off fotr Nordkette I paused for the obligatory selfie with the tourists in front of the City's famous golden roof.

On my visit last weekend it didn't look too hospitable on the way up - thick cloud.

And at 1,905m things hadn't improved much.

I opted for the breakfast option at the Seegrube restaurant hoping the weather would clear.

The ski area is not huge but there are 10 or so runs ranging form a very steep black under the top cable car to green runs and beginner areas.

See here for a post on my visit to Nordkette winter as I skied the steep black run at the top.

This time is was shrowded in fog and I decided to play safe and follow the marked runs.

The area at Seegrube also has one of the city's newest nightlife hotspots - Cloud 9.

At the weekend it is a nightclub and as I popped by head through the entrance and had a feeling (and smell!) of the morning after the night before.

I have visited Innsbruck many times and always try to make a point of staying in the city if I can - in December this year I sampled the Xmas markets as the festive season was in full swing.

This time I thought I'd see some of the cultural offerings.

So, I asked the receptionist at my hotel, The Innsbruck Hotel, which were the 6 best attractions.

This was the answer:

1.   The Golden Roof

2.   Triumphal Arch

3.   St Anne's Column

4.   The Olympic Ski Jump

5.   The Olympic Museum

6.   Ambras Castle

I managed the first three in my short few hours in the city - all were just a short walk for the Innsbruck Hotel that is ideally position for a city break.

All too soon my time was up and I had to head to the station to catch a train round to the ski resort of Soelden.

Once again I'd had a fabulous time in one of my favourite alpine cities - next time I will make it 48 hours.
