The most expensive ski boot
Friday September 25, 2009 - Email this article to a friend

The manufacturers claim it is and it certainly doesn't come cheap. So, what do you get for your money?

The Apex boot, made by the Apex Sports Group in Colorado, will set you back $1,295 (£790).  It has been designed by Denny Hanson, the man who brought us the rear entry ski boot in the 1970’s.

It is being marketed for its comfort and is actually a heat moulded liner that fits tightly into another outer shell boot that then attaches to the ski.

Once out of the outer shell it can be worn normally and is more like a snowboard boot witht the same levels of comfort.

The manufacturers say you can even drive a car wearing them.

Last resting place for the rear entry bootLast resting place for the rear entry bootThe whole thing weighs less than the traditional ski boot and will be sold online and at high-end shops in the US.

The company is aiming to sell 1,200 pairs this season.

"The Apex is the most expensive boot in the industry but it is evident from first glance that it is steeped in value," says Hanson. "It looks, feels, fits and skis like nothing else on the market."

A ski boot needs to be stiffer than a snowboard boot as the skier needs to transfer pressure to the ski, whereas a snowboarder needs to be balanced over the centre of a board.

It all sounds grand in theory but maybe it will go the way of the rear-entry boot which are few and far between nowdays.
