Channel Tunnel update
Wednesday December 10, 2008 - Email this article to a friend

More skiers are driving to the Alps and many are using the tunnel.

The tunnel is the fastest way to cross the channel if you are driving to the Alps and many more skiers and snowboarders are opting to drive.

There are no luggage restrictions like on airplanes, so you can take as much gear as you want, and if you have 4 or 5 people in the car it usually works out cheaper.  You can even get an extra day or two on the slopes.

tunnel2However, services have had to be revised this winter due to the fire earlier in the year.

The fire on September 11th destroyed part of the tunnel and it took 100 firefighters more than 15 hours to put it out.  32 people were led to safety and 14 were treated for minor injuries.

Currently one passenger train runs every 90 minutes, there used to be 2 - 3 every hour.

"The reconstruction work is going well and it's hoped we will complete it all by mid-February," advises Charlotte Brokes, a spokeswoman from Eurotunnel.

A reporter from PlanetSKI, Tim Cooke, took the tunnel on the way to the Alps last month. Take a look at the video below.

The BBC's Transport correspondent, Tom Symmonds,  was given rare access inside the tunnel earlier this month to see the repair work going on and you can see his video report here.
