Suburban skiing in Surbiton
Friday October 16, 2009 - Email this article to a friend
It's been a summer of strange dry land ski crazes, but this has got to win the award for the most bizarre. Skiing this weekend in the London suburb of Surbiton with ice strapped to your feet.
Surbiton's own Ski Sunday is taking place this Sunday, 18th October, to raise money for 'The Shooting Star Children's Hospice'.
It's certainly a novel way of raising money for a very worthy cause.
Taking to the streetsThe sport is a complete swap of alpine skiing. Instead of skiing on snow and ice you strap blocks of ice to the bottom of your feet and then ski on the tarmac.
It's so versatile you can practically ski anywhere you like.
"This revolutionary new method of transport has pulled the rug from under those après ski resorts that pride themselves on dress code rather than challenge and has opened every high street, cul-de-sac and back road up as potential suburban ski slopes," the event organisers said.
Anyone can enter the event in either teams or as an individual.
It should be a great laugh, but in truth the only real aim of the day to raise as much money as possible for charity.
To enter just visit their website.
It costs £3 million every year, that's £8,000 a day, to maintain The Shooting Star Children's Hospice services and with no long-term statutory funding, the majority of this comes from voluntary donations.
Still confused by exactly what suburban skiing is?
Then check out the You Tube video below.
Here at PlanetSKI we can't really see it taking off as a new winter sport, or summer one for that matter.
But it seems a great way of raising some vital cash for a very good cause. We hope to be able get to Surbiton on Sunday and will bring you a full report.
