NEW AIRLINE ROUTE TO SION NEXT WINTER
Monday February 20, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

The new service will operate between UK regional airports and Sion Airport in the Swiss Valais region, cutting transfer times to some of the country's most popular ski resorts.

The "virtual" airline, which will lease aircraft from existing operator Trade Air, will fly five days a week from Thursday to Monday throughout the ski season starting in December.

The plan is for 40 flights a week from eight UK airports - Southend, Manchester, Bristol, Southampton, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Leeds-Bradford, and Newcastle.

The airline will also operate out of Rotterdam and Brussels.

Resorts with easy access to Sion include Verbier, Nendaz, Zermatt, Crans Montana, Saas-Fee, Anzère, Leukerbad and Zinal-Grimentz.

A road journey from Sion to Verbier takes roughly 50 minutes.  From Geneva to Verbier it's a minimum of two hours.

A spokesman for PowdAir, Rob Stewart, said the company was working closely with Sion Airport to develop the new service for skiers and snowboarders with a capacity to fly 8,000 passengers a month.

"We are excited to help launch an airline route that serves the most popular ski resorts in Switzerland, making the journey for people in the UK quicker and easier," he said.

The company says the average ticket price will be approximately £100 - £150 per person each way including free ski carriage.

The airline will use a Fokker 100 aircraft on all routes, seating 109 people, with flight times typically between 1 hour 25 minutes and 2 hours from UK airports and around 1 hour from Rotterdam and Brussels.

Tickets will be available to purchase in April 2017 online at www.Powdair.ski

Swiss International Airlines has been operating flights from London Heathrow to Sion this February for the peak holiday period.  There's no news on whether the service will be extended to other dates.
