Tuesday May 9, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

Two men and a woman have died in an avalanche in the Vanoise National Park near Bonneval-sur-Arc. An investigation is underway. UPDATED

The group was ski touring on a 3,638m peak near Albaron when the avalanche struck shorlty after 10AM.

It was up to 200m wide.

The weather was clear at the time and a nearby climber who saw the accident raised the alarm.

First reports from the Dauphiné Libéré newspaper said the avalanche caused "several deaths'.

A male and female were touring with a mountain guide they had hired.

All were in their 30s and they perished as they were swept over rocks.

Their bodies were found quickly as they were not buried deeply under the snow.

The names and nationalities of the victims have not been released as next of kin are informed.

At one stage it was thought there might be a fourth victim but that was ruled out.

The route is a well-known ski tour route and it is not extreme but does require a good level of ability and fitness.

The three were headed towards the Greffier pass and had begun climbing the Vallonet glacier.

The area is to the south east of the ski resort of Tignes and close to the Italian border.
