WHO WILL GO TO THE WINTER OLYMPICS FOR GB?
Monday June 12, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

The governing body for British skiing and snowboarding has announced the standards athletes will have to meet to have a chance of being selected for next year's Games in South Korea. NEW

British Ski and Snowboard have published documents outlining the criteria for nomination to compete at PyeongChang, in 2018.

BSS is responsible for nominating the snowsports athletes in all the Olympic disciplines but the final decision on who will make Team GB rests with the British Olympic Association.

The documents set out in detail the process by which British Ski and Snowboard will decide who they want to represent GB at the Games next February. They complement the previously published Olympic Qualifying Standards.

The final nominations will be made by BSS by 1600GMT on 24th January 2018, with the British Olympic Association making a decision on the selected athletes the following day.

Britain has several potential medallists as the next Winter Olympics approach.

Among them freestylers Katie Ormerod, James Woods, Izzy Atkins (main photo), Jamie Nicholls and alpine skier, Dave Ryding, who won World Cup silver at Kitzbühel last season.

The aim of British Ski and Snowboard is to increase its Olympics medal haul in snowsports.

Freestyle snowboarder Jenny Jones won the first medal for GB on snow when she picked up the bronze in the Slopestyle event at Sochi 2014.

British Ski and Snowboard's target is for GB to be among the world's top five snowsports nations by 2030.

It's put in place a world-class coaching structure for each Olympic discipline, with new specialist coaches announced recently.

It's hoping to bring in more money to support the athletes. Fund-raising initiatives launched ahead of last winter have so far failed to meet expectations.

The Nomination Criteria and Policies for each Olympic snowsports discipline and information on the appeals procedure can be found here on the British Ski and Snowboard website.
