The Wanda Indoor Ski and Winter Sports Resort in the Chinese city of Harbin has opened.

The ski centre is part of a huge theme park development that has cost US$6 billion and has taken four years to build.

It is in the north east of China in one of the country's main winter sports regions, which is home to more than 50 ski resorts, including Yabuli.

The centre does not have the longest indoor ski run in the world - there are slopes in France, Germany and the Netherlands that are longer - but it is wider than any of those and is the biggest in terms of area.

It has 72,600 square metres of snow.

There are six runs:

  • An intermediate run at 60m wide, 500m long with a 20 degree pitch
  • A black run that is 40m wide, 380m long with a 25 degree pitch
  • A shorter black run that goes into the main park and a large snow area.
  • Two easy 40m long slopes in a separate area.

Skiing's world governing body, the International Ski Federation (FIS) took a look while in China for a meeting about the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

"What we saw was impressive," said FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis.

"The size and scope of the facility that will enable both newcomers right through to advanced skiers and snowboarders is unique.

"This project is a clear indication that skiing and snowsports in China are poised to take off in the upcoming years."

There's been an explosion of interest in winter sports in China since Beijing was chosen for the 2022 Games, with new ski resorts and ski centres being built.

The Chinese are aiming to improve their Olympic medal count on snow.

Only four of China's 11 gold, nine silver and seven bronze medals won so far at Winter Olympics have come on snow.

The Chinese government is also hoping the Olympics will inspire 300 million Chinese to participate in winter sports.

The Wanda Indoor Ski and Winter Sports Resort also has a shopping mall, a cinema, outdoor theme park, hockey rink, curling training lanes, hotels and live theatre venues.
