4th July

America will be celebrating today, big.

A few of our favourite spots get to do it with a little of what we like best.

So here's a look at those resorts offering skiing and snowboarding, with more besides, in the USA.

Squaw Valley, California.

Celebrations have been going on since 1st July at the resort's Freedom Fest.

"It is certainly uncommon to be able ski in July but it is truly unheard of to be operating at the capacity that we will be operating on July 4th Weekend," Squaw Valley's CEO, Andy Wirth, says.

"With five lifts [running] including the Funitel and Gold Coast Express, pool parties, live music and the Lake Cushing Crossing, this will be the Ultimate Independence Day Weekend," he told news site, Tahoetopia.

Down in the village is the Fine Arts and Crafts Festival while the 'Ultimate Independence Day Weekend' includes pool parties and barbecues up the mountain.

It is going all out with three days of live music, hot tub parties, free shows at KT Base Bar and fireworks on Monday evening.

And then there's the skiing, 1st - 4th July until 2pm.

Not to escape mention is the annual pond skimming event: Lake Cushing Crossing.

To honour the day, members of the military are welcomed to the resort to ski for free!

Ski the Summit from 2nd - 4th July until 1pm on the prepped ski slope.

After the morning's ski or ride, the action continues in West Village: mountain biking off Sunshine Accelerator, barbecues on the deck, a chairlift up to the top of Pine Marten for the views.

"It's kind of a novelty thing to be able to ski in July, and it's exciting. We are stoked," the resort's marketing and communications manager, Stirling Cobb, said.

"If you have a mountain bike, there is no reason not to throw it in your car as well and bring it up."

Colorado's Arapahoe Basin will surprisingly be closed on the 4th. It is open for summer operations Friday-Monday 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. through September 17th.

Give us a few hours for it to kick off and check back in for what goes on today in the mountains.
