WILDFIRE THREAT TO BRECKENRIDGE
Thursday July 6, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

One of America's best known ski resorts was put on alert as a forest fire broke out on the edge of the town. NEW & UPDATED

Residents of Breckenridge, the most popular US ski area among Britons, were put on notice to leave as the fast-growing blaze spread.

The fire prompted the evacuation of about 450 homes in the Peak Seven neighbourhood, but a shift in the wind late on Wednesday afternoon prevented the flames moving into Breckenridge town itself.

On Thursday, firefighters were still working to stop the blaze reaching homes in the ski resort and the historic town centre as it continued to burn about two miles north of the resort.

However, by Monday 10th July, the fire was reported to be static and all evacuation and pre-evacuation orders were lifted.

Residents were told to remain vigilant.

The fire is believed to have started about midday on Wednesday near a section of the Colorado Trail on National Forest land.

According to the Denver Post, the smoke was spotted by a mountain biker about four miles north of Breckenridge.

Photographer Chris Brower published a series of spectacular images, including this one, on Instagram:

The fire grew rapidly but the change in wind direction forced it back onto already-burned ground and slowed it down.

Breckenridge is in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and is one of PlanetSKI's favourite large US ski resorts.

We were last there in February this year:

Forest fires are not uncommon in North America.

Two others this summer have come close to ski resorts.

A huge blaze near the southern Utah ski town of Brian Head has been burning since 17th June.  After three weeks it is 80 per cent contained:

And staff at Whistler in Canada, helped hold back a fire on the edge of the town earlier this week:
