Under the spotlight: The brakes are off as construction of largest ever US ski village development is underway in Aspen Snowmass.

The recent partnership of Aspen Skiing Co. and private equity firm KSL Capital has been big news.

It is about a deal worth $1.5 billion to takeover Intrawest Resort Holdings's six mountain resorts.

Intrawest once ruled as the world's largest ski area operator.

North America's ski scene is now dominated by two snow sharks with Aspen Ski Co. rivaling Vail Resorts - Whistler being the newest addition to its 15-strong roster.

And now what's being touted as the largest ever ski village development is commencing in Aspen Snowmass, with Aspen Ski Co. and KSL Capital as the project's two major investors.

The building of Base Village is to take 10 years and $600m.

The construction of the new Snowmass village, managed by East West Partners, has been on pause for some time.

However, July has marked movement on the large-scale building work that is to start later this year.

Five different architectural firms have been engaged, each designing separate buildings, to provide "their unique interpretation of mountain contemporary design," according to the press release.

Other big - USA-sized - redevelopment plans in progress include one in Taos, New Mexico - that Snowmass Base Village is claming to be double the size of - and another in Killington, Vermont.

Base Village was originally developed by a partnership of SkiCo and Intrawest Corp., which sold the property in 2007.

SkiCo is said to have invested around $100, in the Snowmass Ski Area.

These include the building of the High Alpine four-man chairlift and the Elk Camp gondola.

SkiCo is also concentrating on summer venture Lost Forest, a development highlighted by an alpine coaster, canopy tours and new bike trails.
