SNOWPARK VICTIM OF CLIMATE CHANGE
Saturday July 29, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

One of Europe's most popular off-season freestyle parks will not be built this autumn as a result of increasing glacial retreat.

The Superpark Dachstein near Schladming in Austria had become a popular autumn freestyle training base for both local and international pro skiers and snowboarders.

It's the latest snowsports area to be hit by the effects of global warming.

The Superpark Dachstein operators, Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen, have released an official statement following repeated rumours about the future of the park, which was situated just below 2,700m altitude on the Dachstein glacier.

"After many great years of Superpark on the Dachstein glacier, we've heavy-heartedly decided that we will not rebuild Dachstein Superpark in the upcoming fall," the statement says.

"One important reason is the increasing glacial retreat in the park area.

"It is definitely unjustifiable that we were already forced to damage the glacial ice sheet during the build-up.

"It's the dictate of the moment to preserve the glacial substance. We ask you to understand the justified criticism of environmentalists.

"We most cordially thank all our loyal guests.

"Needless to say, we will again put all our force and dedication into Superpark Planai.

"The regular ski operation will start in fall with the first onset of winter. The same holds true for the cross-country ski trail."

It means the area will only have a freestyle park - on the Planai mountain above Schladming - in the winter months.

Though small in area by other park standards, Superpark Dachstein had earned a reputation as a Mecca for the freestyle scene since it was created by pro-snowboarder Bernd Mandlberger, who brought his shaping skills to it.

It had a beginner's park area as well as a pro and intermediate line and was open into the late Spring and again in early autumn.
