MOUNTAIN SAFETY TIPS FROM KILIAN JORNET

The mayor of Saint Gervais les Bains (Haute Savoie) signed an arrete municipale on 17th August, meaning that with immediate effect, anyone attempting to climb Mont Blanc via the Gouter Route must have a minimum level of equipment and clothing.

Some may think this sensible but not Spanish mountain man, Kilian Jornet, who thinks its pointless having all this equipment listed below if you don't know how to use it.

  • Warm, waterproof (Gore Tex) jacket
  • Mountaineering trousers and base layer
  • Mountaineering-specific boots and crampons
  • Harness and crevasse rescue equipment
  • Rope
  • Ice axe
  • GPS or altimeter
  • Hat, sunglasses, sun cream, ski mask

We reported on Kilian Jornet's reaction to this edict in our August 20th post here, where he stood naked on top of Monte Bianco, where there is no such rule in place.

In reponse to his own reaction Kilian Jornet has released this video - he offers valuable advice on being safe in the mountains, whatever your sport.

Watch it!

2017 TROMSØ SKYRACE

Athlete and epic Mountain Man, Kilian Jornet, posted the video below of the 2017 TROMSØ SKYRACE, that took place in Norway on 4th-8th August.

Now in its third year the race is a gruelling challenge, combining endurance, speed and mountaineering skills so it is only suitable for highly experienced competitors with mountain knowledge.

The race is run in stages.

In the video below we see Kilian and other athletes tackling the route that has long and sustained sections of scrambling terrain on Hampeokken ridge.

We see them running on lose rocky terrain on off trail sections in Tromsdalstind and then an off trail forest sections on the lower parts and then snow fields on the summits.

The Tromsø Skyrace competition website comments:

“We cannot think of a better place than the mountains of Tromsø for a skyrace: a place to run between the sky and the earth and to feel freedom. You will run technical ridges with the fjords on every side, and cross grass valleys in true wilderness, while the most iconic and beautiful city Tromso. The course joins the 2 higher summits of the area, Tromsdalstind and Hamperokken, in pure single track and off-trail style “

The footage is spectacular.

THE FLYING FRENCHIES ARE BACK

PlanetSKI is passionate about this troupe of French mountaineers/athletes who clown around the mountains in a nonchalant fashion.

We love their wit, their humour, their bravery and their huge mountain skills.

In Welcome to our Circus - Flying Frenchies - Best of? - Showreel? - Who Cares! ... we see some of the best 'archive' footage from this wonderful group, and a lot of new stuff too.

Their You Tube caption comments, "We gave Damien Artero tons of raw files, and here is what came out of our messy hard drives!"

And we love what Damien has come up with......

Loving the fresh footage from these epic guys - we hope there will be a lot more from them in the near future.

IMMENSE WILDERNESS EP1 - PIONEERING AK HELI SKIING - PART 1

This is about the pioneers of heli skiing in Alaska.

In the early 1990s extreme skiers fell in love with the immense wildness of Alaska's Chugach Mountains surrounding Valdez.

The Chugach has everything that skiers desire: consistently deep powder snow that coats steep slopes, massive vertical descending thousands of feet from peaks to glaciers, virtually endless terrain options, a glacial refrigeration effect that enhances snowfall and preserves powder, and regions that are protected from major wind corridors.

Helicopters were, and still are the quickest, most efficient method to access the remote terrain and ski mountains that would take days or weeks to access by foot.

These mountains demanded a whole new approach to helicopter skiing and terrain management protocol.

This is the first webisode in a series showing what it took to pioneer Alaska heli skiing and open up the vast Chugach Mountains for skiers and snowboarders from around the world to enjoy.

ROGUE ELEMENTS - OFFICIAL TRAILER

The new TGR film Rogue Elements explores the relationship between the whims of Mother Nature and the rogue nature of the adventurer.

The power of the winter's force was on full display in the winter of 2017, with telephone pole-snapping storms pounding the Wyoming landscape.

Regions to the west, recently left arid and forgotten, were gifted with unprecedented snow accumulation.

Its complete athlete line-up includes: Angel Collinson, Jeremy Jones, Ian McIntosh, Tim Durtschi, Dash Longe, Nick McNutt, Hadley Hammer, Johnny Collinson, Sammy Carlson, Dane Tudor, Clayton Villa, Cam Riley, Griffin Post, Sam Smoothy, Sammy Luebke, Elyse Saugstead, Thayne Rich, Sean Jordan, Casey Brown and Cam McCaul.

It's a great trailer - we can't wait for its general release after it premiers in Jackson Hole, on September 16 2017.
