There may be a heatwave in southern Europe but winter has made an appearance in the Alps. Some August snow has been falling. UPDATED

The temperature has dropped and snow has been coming down.

It is certainly very welcome at the few glacier resorts that are open - this year has not been a vintage one for summer skiing and snowboarding.

One of the best places to be was Zermatt in Switzerland up on the Plateau Rosa glacier.

"Amazing conditions on the Zermatt glacier, mid August just like mid January!" said the Warren Smith Ski Academy.

The Academy is currently running its summer courses from the neighbouring Italian resort of Cervinia.

"With just 3 weeks of our summer courses remaining we are very pleased to say that the Plateau Rosa glacier is in possibly the best condition we've ever seen it! Don't miss your last chance to come and join us in this amazing place," the WSSA added.

The snow started falling on Friday with the temperartures down to -9°C at the top of the resort.

On Saturday 12th August this was the scene ...

One of our readers is Ed Mannix who runs the company Matterhorn Chalets in Zermatt.

"The glorious 12th! Really busy on the Breithorn today but a great run down in the powder! Where else in Europe can you ski over 1200 metres vertical in a single run in the middle of August?" posted Ed on Facebook.

It was pretty good in neighbouring Saas-Fee too.

And on Saturday the lucky ones were also out making a few turns in the powder.

It's also coming down in Hintertux in Austria - and their webcams are whited-out with snow!

But in Italy it's been a different story.

After not the best winter regarding snowfall, the European heatwave is having an effect on summer skiing.

The Stelvio Pass glacier is now closed for the summer, though it was meant to offer skiing until 5th November.

And it's snowing in Tignes in France too:

PlanetSKI's chief reporter, Jane Peel, was in the resort last month for some summer skiing - it's fair to say the conditions were mixed:

The new snow is too little, too late - the resort closed for summer skiing and snowboarding on August 6th.
