Snowdome for Blackpool
Tuesday October 20, 2009 - Email this article to a friend
They seem to be springing up all over the place and now it's the turn of Blackpool. Plans have just been unveiled and it could be open by 2015.
The council has announced an agreement with developers that could see a snowdome two-thirds the height of the famous Blackpool Tower and 3 times the size of the Chill Factore in Manchester.
Greenback Partnerships has the rights to the site for the next 18 months as it carries out a detailed feasability study.
If it goes ahead it will have 5 separate slopes and the usual shops, bars and restaurants. The company claims the development would create 3,000 local jobs and is predicting 2m people would use the facility each year.
The Snow CentreThe latest one to open in the UK was The Hemel Hempstead Snow centre back in May and it has proved to be very popular.
Below is a video interview we made at the opening, with the head of The Snow Centre, Ann Horner and this article on what it is actually like to ski on wiht another video.
Also here is a story we wrote earlier this month on the growth in indoor skiing on real snow in the UK.
For further information see this article in The Gazette newspaper with a video interview with those people involved.
It is planned to construct it on a 20-acre car park that was once earmarked to be Blackpool's ill-fated supercasino.
