TRENDS & NEWS - WINTER 17/18
Tuesday September 5, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

Impressions of last year & how the ski market stands. Ski Famille MD Chris Thompson gives a market overview.

Canvassing for trends and news for this coming winter, UK tour operators across the board have reported that there is demand.

Trading is good.

Last winter saw good occupancy levels, reported the owner of chalet company Ski Famille.

Christmas and New Year, however, again proved difficult to fill up.

And then there was the old problem of snow.

Or lack of.

This past season there was a long snow lapse.

But we are all trying to forget about last year's conditions and look ahead, optimistically.

What it's looking like this coming winter:

Reports are of strong early booking, a good spread of dates and selling prices are holding.

Half Term and Easter remain high demand periods for families to ski.

There is not just positive early booking, Chris reports of his own Ski Famille, but January is looking the best he can remember.

He was speaking at the industry event, Ski Launch, earlier this week.

What else is looking good:

There seems to be a pick up in resorts not previously taken up by the UK market.

The Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada have proved popular for Ski Weekends, and Zenith Holidays have got good numbers booking to Slovakia and Soelden.

Ski Famille reports an increase in the number of families booking that are completely new to skiing.

Always good news to have new skiers!

Resort investment is good news for the ski industry.

Val d'Isere has a big 10-year plan as do many others.

This shows they are confident in the UK market.

So are we.

And the bad news:

Exchange rates -

What will happen over the next year-and-a-half? It's uncertain.

There is little indication of what the framework will be and what the future will look like.

It is this that is causing the difficulty for tour operators and chalet companies.

It is near impossible to prepare for an unknown future.

That's the general consensus and outcome of such talks.

What will it look like and what can we do to protect what we have and UK ski holidays to the European mountains?

It's open for answer.
