NEW SKI SLOPE FOR WALES
Thursday September 7, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

There are plans to build an indoor ski slope in the Valleys and it is to be Europe's longest at 500m.

It is a £450m investment and part of a regeneration scheme at Rhydycar West.

The project includes a new leisure complex, part of which would be the ski slope.

The entire scheme is predicted to create 800 jobs in the area.

The area of Merthyr Tydfil was a coal mining site until 2013.

"We believe our scheme's exciting sport and adventure facilities will attract more visitors to Merthyr," Leigh Large of Marvel Limited, the company that acquired the site, has said.

"The company has been working with Snowsport Cymru Wales to deliver the project, which said the ski slope would become the longest in the UK," Large added.

The company has been working with national governing body Snowsport Cymru Wales.

The Snowsport Cymru Wales chief executive, Robin Kellen, said the project was a great opportunity that would "create opportunities for increasing participation in snowsports" - the BBC reports.

So far, the response from the proposal has been good.

'Brilliant news. Cracking site for it too and close to the a470'  wrote one man on the Merthyr Express Facebook page.

Performance director of British Ski and Snowboard, Dan Hunt, has said:

"I am very excited by the prospect of having a national training centre of excellence for snowsports in Wales."

Concerns raised on Facebook mainly refer to the area's aesthetics.

It is described as a "beautiful green space", hoped not to be destroyed by the building plans.

As well as the ski slope, the plans include:
  • new homes
  • two hotels with spa and conference facilities
  • a water park
  • an indoor surf simulator
  • an equestrian centre
  • an indoor skate and bike park
