NEW AIR ROUTE TO SWISS ALPS - Katie Bamber, Senior News Reporter
Wednesday September 13, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

Powdair is launching flights to Sion giving quick & easy access to resorts, some with 30min transfer times. But is there a demand?

In and out of London City Airport + a few others besides.

Transfer times to some of Switzerland's most famous ski resorts are to be cut with Powdair's new flight to Sion:

  • Verbier 45 minutes
  • Crans Montana 35 minutes
  • Nendaz 23 minutes
  • Thyon 4 Vallees 40 minutes
  • Anzère 29 minutes

Zermatt will no longer be a schlep to reach from the airport.

Some of the resorts of the Swiss and French Portes du Soleil region wil be easier to reach.

The new airline is supported by BBC Ski Sunday presenter, Ed Leigh, who is based in nearby Verbier.

"These short transfer times are down to as little as 20 minutes. It's going to be amazing for short trips," he said.

"There are four resorts accessible in under half an hour and it opens up skiing there for the weekend [for us travelling from the UK]."

The new flight will help significantly cut down travel to the resort of Verbier.

"The region has been crying out for this and now it's happening we all need to get behind it....It's great to be involved in something that will be of huge benefit to the area and to skiers and snowboarders who want to reach the Valais quickly and without fuss."

However with dwindling numbers of British skiers heading to Switzerland the big question in whether there is enough demand.

How many people want to fly into Sion and visit the Swiss resorts?

Powdair's head of commercial, Zoë Ombler, spoke to PlanetSKI about the benefits, especially for weekend skiers.

"The flight sets off at 8am on the way back, and with the hour gained you can be on the DLR and at your desk by 9."

"Not only do we want to make it easier to visit the Valais more frequently but also encourage more first-time visits," Zoë said.

"This might be because they don't know about the region ... or that the reputation of Switzerland being expensive has proved too much of a deterrent.

"By partnering with a variety of very different resorts, we hope to help those first-time visitors decide which resort might be the best fit for them, dependent on what kind of holiday experience they're looking for and what budget they have to play with.

"Switzerland doesn't have to be expensive or exclusive and we are delighted to be working in true partnership with our resorts to help dispel some of those myths," she claimed.
