FIRST SNOW ACROSS NORTH AMERICA - James Cove, PlanetSKI Editor
Sunday September 17, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

Snow falls at US resorts and in Canada too. The snow is also helping fight the wildfires of the summer that still burn in the mountains.

Much, if not all of it, will melt but it is still great to see.

A sign in the USA and Canada that the seasons are changing and winter is on its way.

Here are the latest pictures we have that we post on Thursday:

Earlier we had news from Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

"Fall hasn't officially arrived in Jackson Hole yet despite cooler weather this week, but we're excited to report that we received our first snowfall of the season overnight," said a spokesperson from the resort.

"Atop the Tram this morning we were greeted with 2-4 inches of snow and cold blowing winds that resembled more of January than September."

"Temperatures have dropped in the valley and certainly in the mountains and it seems Rendezvous Mountain and Big are getting their first true taste of winter this weekend. Forecasts show snowy weather into early next week and it looks to be about to start."

Here at PlanetSKI Jackson Hole is one of our favourite powder resorts in the USA - up there with Alta and Powder Mountain in Utah in our view.

See here for the PlanetSKI road trip visit to Jackson Hole last winter:

Snow has also been falling at A-Basin in Colorado.

It is usually one of the first resorts to open in the USA:

"Mother Nature stopped by Arapahoe Basin this morning, leaving us a little winter preview with snow from the base area to the summit. These September snowfalls get us stoked to kick off Colorado's longest ski and ride season next month," said the resort.

"A-Basin will begin snowmaking training and testing in the coming week, and will keep an eye on the forecast - when Mother Nature says "go," we'll be ready to lend a helping hand to set a base on our High Noon trail, the first run to open at the ski area."

There has been some snow too in Crested Butte in Colorado.

At the weekend snow fell in the mountains in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

The snow in Montana is a welcome relief to help fight the wildfires that are burning.

Firefighters in Montana have been fighting massive wildfires through the summer with 800 square miles burnt so far.

Fire officials say the snow won't put out the wildfires, but the snowfall should slow down the spread of the flames.

See here for our earlier reports on the wildfires in the US mountains:

And they will be helping in Canada too that also saw huge wildfires in the summer.

Here at PlanetSKi we witnessed them as we travelled through Alberta and British Columbia:

And it's been snowing at the resort of Snowbird in Utah.

The National Weather Service says there could be 8 to 14 inches of snow in areas over 7,000 feet.

And lets not forget Canada where things are getting wintry too.

Here is Sunshine Village near Banff in Alberta:

"Good to wake up and see some snow on Goat's Eye," said a spokesperson from the resort.

Elsewhere on PlanetSKI you may have seen a couple of resorts in the Tirol in Austria opened this weekend:

Here at PlanetSKi we will be updating this report so do check back as we look at the snow across North America.
