YOUNG GUNS TAKE OVER
Wednesday October 18, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

There's a changing of the guard in the world of British freestyle as all this year's indoor champions were born in the 21st century. NEW

It was the youngsters who triumphed at the 2017 Indoor Brits at Manchester's Chill Factore.

It's the first time that the open category in both ski and snowboard, male and female has been won by young guns.

Skiers and snowboarders of all ages took part in the annual pre-season pilgrimage to the British Indoor Championships to tackle rails, boxes and kickers.

Snowboard

The standout ride of the day came from one of the youngest competitors.

Snowboarder Mia Brookes is no stranger to the top step of the Brits podium, but has only ever seen it while in the under-12s category - understandable as she was born in 2007.

But in front of her home crowd she took her debut overall British title, with Cerys Allen second and Fiona Reid third.

At 14, Leon Drynan took his maiden win with some enormous inverted 720s over the kicker.

The defending champion Angus Malloch took silver and Lewis Moore (also 14) the bronze.

Ski

Last year's champion Kirsty Muir, now 13, did the double, taking her second open title with huge 720s off the biggest kicker.

Joining her on the podium were Lex Brown, who took a step up from last year's 3rd place to take silver, and Lara Shaw who claimed the bronze.

In the men's field, defending champion Justin Taylor-Tipton impressed from the start and took a second straight win with 450 on and off the biggest gas pipe feature and a cork 7 mute that made the building shake.

At 17-years-old he is now the oldest reigning British indoor champion.

Tom Greenway and Chris McCormick took silver and bronze respectively.
