SKI PANTS: PLANETSKI PUTS THE BEST TO THE TEST - Alf Alderson, Gear & Equipment Editor
Thursday October 19, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

Good strides are essential when you're on the slopes - here are Six of the Best

Schöffel Bern £180 www.schoeffel.com

The Bern features Schöffel's 'Venturi' fabric, which is waterproof, windproof, breathable and stretchy, so despite the relatively slim fit these are very comfortable ski pants.

In addition, all the seams are bonded and the pants are also insulated, making them a good option if you feel the cold.

The look is plain and simple, although there are a reasonable amount of features on the Bern, including a sturdy pair of elasticated braces and rear bib; these can both be detached if you prefer to wear a belt, for which there are generously-sized belt loops.

Additional features include two zippered hand pockets and a zippered rear pocket on the right, whilst the knees are shaped and there are zippered and poppered cuff adjusters along with a small scuff guard (we'd have preferred this to be somewhat bigger) and boot gaiters.

For piste skiers looking for a relatively plain but performance oriented pair of ski pants, the Schöffel Bern is a top option.

VERDICT No-nonsense, well-built ski pants for piste cruisers.  Buy It Here >>

Norrona Tamok £499 www.norrona.com

The once vivid colours that were Norrona's hallmark have in the last couple of seasons been partially replaced by more muted tones, as in the Tamok.

That said, the Norrona quality hasn't changed, and the these three-layer Gore-tex shell pants looks good at the same time as keeping you dry and comfortable.

A pretty loose cut provides good freedom of movement, and zippered vents on the inside of the legs (with mesh backing) allow you to cool down on big bootpacking or skinning missions, or sunny spring days.

The Tamok has a good range of pockets - two cargo pockets, two hand pockets and one rear pocket, all with waterproof zips, and the cargo pockets have mesh-backed zippered vents on the side too.

You also get Velcro waist adjusters as well as riveted belt loops, a powder skirt system which is designed to integrate with Norrona jackets (including the matching Tamok jacket), a zippered adjuster on the inside lower leg (which can be a bit fiddly to operate), snow gaiters, inside reinforcements on the lower leg and Cordura armour around the boot cuff.

This is effectively all you need in a pair of ski pants, so if you're looking for a shell pant and budget isn't a major consideration we'd recommend checking out the Norrona Tamok.

VERDICT Good-looking, well-designed ski pants from the Scandi gearmeisters, albeit at a price.

Picture Naikoon £209.99 www.hypedsports.com

These good-value, insulated pants from Naikoon come with plenty of features, as ever with Picture.

Made from fully taped 20k/15k waterproof and breathable recyclable R-PET membrane outer fabric, they also have a supersoft 'Coremax' lining which feels lovely next to the skin, whilst 41 per cent of the outer fabric content is recycled.

There's an elasticated waist gaiter which prevents snow and draughts getting where you definitely don't want either, below which are two front pockets with waterproof zips.

Right behind these are vents, one either side, with waterproof zips and mesh inners; they don't go far beneath your hips so are to an extent hidden away under your jacket.

You also get a large, zippered cargo pocket on the right leg, articulated knees and boot gaiters with gripper elastic along with popper adjustments on the outside of the lower leg, and the fit is pretty loose for a cool, casual look.

VERDICT Nice looking threads at a decent price, with lots of useful features; but we're not sure about those leg vents...  Buy Is Here >>

Patagonia PowSlayer Bib £500 www.patagonia.com

The PowSlayer is aimed at serious skiers who are also serious about keeping the weight as low as it can go - coming in at just 584g in the large size, they're made from lightweight, highly breathable three-layer Gore-Tex Pro fabric with a recycled face textile, and offer very high levels of durability, breathability, waterproofing and windproofing.

Conversely, they offer very low levels of insulation - you will need to wear a good base layer beneath them.

The minimalist elastic braces can be removed (there are 'grown on' belt loops if you prefer to wear a belt), whilst a very high waist keeps the elements at bay, and like the Picture Naikoon the PowSlayer has vents which run from the waist down either side of the hips to just above the knee.

Needless to say, all the zips (side vents, two cargo pockets and right hand pocket) are waterproof, and the fly has a two-way zip for added convenience.

Also, as you might expect given the hard-core user the PowSlayer is aimed at, the pants come with articulated patterning for increased range of motion along with stretch mesh fabric at the lower back for increased breathability and comfort, whilst large, sturdy scuff guards protect the hem and gaiters seal out snow.

VERDICT High quality, durable shell pants for hard-charging riders who have a healthy budget to play with.

Salomon Icemania ladies ski pants £160 www.salomon.com

The Icemania is one of Salomon's most popular ladies' ski pants on account of the winning combination of a good price and a good fit thanks to using a durable Nylon fabric with four-way stretch elasticity.

Ours came in a vivid rose pink colour, which looks pretty nice, although there are seven other colours to choose from, along with short, medium and long leg lengths.

For insulated pants they're quite light at 600g, and the outer fabric is waterproof, windproof and breathable as well as having heat-sealed seams.

Features are quite minimal - Velcro-adjustable waistband, belt loops, two zippered hand pockets, articulated knees, contrasting scuff and hem guards and boot gaiters - but given the price, the good fit and the warmth the Icemania offers who needs loads of features?

VERDICT Stylish, basic ski pants at a good price, and with lots of fit and colour options.

O'Neill 76 Fashion Focus women's bib pants £139.99 www.oneill.com

If you're too young to remember the ski styles of the seventies fear not, for O'Neill has brought them back with the 76 Fashion Focus (there's a clue in the name).

However, they also have all the benefits of 21st century technology including 10k waterproofing and breathability and a DWR coating to keep you warm and dry.

The softshell fabric also features four-way stretch for added comfort, so the slim cut ergonomic shape isn't restrictive.

A super-soft brushed lining means you can wear the Fashion Focus without a base layer, especially in warmer conditions, and the bright colourways (including the contrasting braces/suspenders) gives them a cheerful look which will be as at home dancing on the tables as hooning down the slopes.

Features are pretty minimal (presumably stuff like pockets, of which there are none, would spoil the cut) and consist of Velcro waist and ankle adjustments and the aforementioned braces, which are removable.

VERDICT Bright, fun and easy to wear, the O'Neill 76 Fashion Focus combines the best of the 70s with the best of winter 17/18.
