By train to The Alps
Sunday October 25, 2009 - Email this article to a friend

A new web site has just launched to help make it easier. Snowcarbon claims it is a one stop shop with all the information you need.

It explains how to book rail journeys, how to get the best fares, and which resorts are easiest to reach by train.

It features 30 resorts across Europe, from Andorra to Austria, plus France, Italy and Switzerland, all of which can be reached by train.

It also contains independent resort reviews written by leading ski journalists, as well as a sophisticated Resort Finder and unique email alerts that send users an email reminder on the day the lowest fares are available for their journey.

We reported on its planned launch earlier this year here on PlanetSKI with details about journey times and routes.

Future or fad?Future or fad?We will be taking a closer look at the site, its claims and rail travel in a special PlanetSKI feature later this month.

Last winter 36,136 skiers and snowboarders were carried by Eurostar to The Alps, up from 30,800 the previous winter.

That translates to about 6% of us travelling by rail to our ski resort.

It does seem good to have this new facility but more often than not a rail journey is considerably more expensive than a flight and though it will undoubtedly cause interest it remains to be seen exactly how much train travel will increase over the coming years.
