More Michelin stars for the Dolomites, super heroes in Mammoth, PlanetSKI rents a car (or not) OMG! + deep snow in Whistler. NEW & UPDATED

See here for a flavour of what it is all about from last month's ramble

And now this month...

WEDNESDAY 22ND NOVEMBER

MORE MICHELIN STARS FOR THE DOLOMITES

As if we need another reason to visit the Dolomites.

For those who enjoy their gourmet food alongside their skiing in one of the most beautiful places on earth, we have good news.

Two of the Michelin starred restaurants in the Badia valley have been upgraded for the 2018 Michelin Guide.

Both are in San Cassiano.

Norbert Niederkofler's St Hubertus is now a three Michelin star establishment, having had two stars since 2007.

The restaurant is one of nine in the whole of Italy with three stars.

Just down the road at La Siriola, whose chef Matteo Metullio was the youngest in Italy to be awarded a Michelin star when he was just 24, now has two stars.

PlanetSKI has been lucky enough to taste the food of both chefs.

It's good, very good - just like the skiing.

SUPER HEROES IN SKI RESORTS

You need to look carefully from lift 23 and Broadway Express in Mammoth Mountain, California.

But if you do you will spot the Incredible Hulk and Wonder Woman.

The small figures are secured by climbing bolts as they are in exposed positions on rocks.

No-one knows who has put them up or if more will come.

It is suspected he or she is a pretty decent climber.

WATCH OUT WHEN YOU GO FISHING

A calm day of ice fishing takes a turn for the worst...

In the depths of the great solitary mountains of the North, lies deep powder and endless lines.

WHAT A TOTAL MUPPET!

Now the PlanetSKI editor, James Cove, likes to consider himself a seasoned traveller.

He's on the road for 100+ days each winter criss-crossing countries and continents as he skis 50+ resorts each winter.

And yet he seems unable to do the simplest of things.

Ordering a rental car in Los Angeles - the car capital of the world.

From his temporary home in Hollywood Hills he chose to order one from the Studio City district (presumably as it was cheapest).

And this is what greeted him ahead of a 5-hour drive to Mammoth Mountain.

All locked upAll locked up

It was Sunday and it was closed.

As he may have found out if he had bothered to read the small print.

Long story but several hours later (and at some considerable cost) he was driving out of the wonderfully named Bing Crosby airport in another rental car altogether.

And from a different company.

Still at least there was a bit of daylight to enjoy the views.

The road to Mammoth MountainOn the road at last

He makes no mention of his errors in his news report - 48-hours in Mammoth.

And we don't recall any mention his past errors - turning up to London City Airport to fly to Switzerland when his flight actually left from Heathrow or arriving a day early for a cross-channel crossing.

And.... then there was this 'mammoth' fail last winter!

Get a grip man.

MONDAY 20TH NOVEMBER

OMG!  IT'S SO DEEP IN PLACES AT WHISTLER

It's only November but Whistler Blackcombe in British Columbia has had some deep, deep snow.

This chap, took the plunge into a deep snow hole, with the added comfort that there was a team of rescuers to dig him out if there was a problem.

As he landed in the deep snow only the tip of his head peeped out above the snow ... it was DEEP!

(NB: caution is urged in the mountains)

WARREN SMITH IS IN CHINA

Warren Smith from the Warren Smith Ski Academy, is at the Wanlong Ski Resort and is about to appear on Chinese TV.

On Monday night this news clip will be seen by 95 million people across China on CCTV 5!

That is some audience.

This is the English version, that he is to share about ski instruction in China.

The academy is currently running its first Level 1 IASI ski instructors course (Irish Association of Ski Instructors) for a Chinese group of potential instructors.

The following blurb accompanied Warren's TV interview:

"Though China has a limited skiing tradition, it has become a popular winter sport with huge growth potential. World-leading ski instructor Warren Smith is among the international professionals to see the unprecedented opportunities for development that China's winter sports industry has. He founded Ski Worldwide at Wanlong Ski Resort based in China's ski town Chongli, as a branch of his Warren Smith Ski Academy."

FORMULA 1 CAR BLASTS IT'S WAY THROUGH SNOW

Snowy winters and mountains might usually be domain to the skiers, but every year Redbull Racing aims to run a formula 1 car through the snow.

This year, F1's youngest racer, Max Verstappen, blasts up the Austrian ski slopes in Kitzbühel.

But it's not an easy ride.

Plan B was required, and with heavy snow chains in place, it still remained challenging.

FORGET THE HIP FLASK - CHECK OUT THE WHISKI POLE!!

How about a pair of hollow ski poles that you fill with your favourite tipple?

Each one holds 8 fluid ounces or half a pint.

The blurb warns users, "the liquid may freeze so allow ample room for the liquid to expand - Water freezes at 32 degrees F (0 degrees C) and 70-proof alcoholic beverages freeze at -2 degrees F (-19 degrees C), windchill does not matter."

And they seem to have thought of everything, there is a plastic thread-cap so no lips-stick to the metal pole.

They're matte black, made from aircraft grade aluminium with stainless steel tips and interchangeable basket.

They're not on the market yet, but the concept is being developed and put through a Kickstarter Campaign.

On the boring side... we think it's a fun idea, but not sure about the safety aspect.

How would you take a sip in the lift queue without poking someone in the ribs with the metal tip?

ARE YOU A YORKSHIRE-T DRINKER?

Guests at Mountain Heaven catered ski chalets soon will be.

Mountain Heaven has bought 20,000 Yorkshire Tea bags to ensure all their guests get 'a proper brew' ... and they are all in this van heading out to the Alps.

But why Yorkshire Tea?

Mountain Heaven has done extensive tea-tasting-tests 🤣, and in their view there is evidence their choice of brand is most satisfactory.

They told us, "What we have found with extensive research is that Yorkshire tea is stronger than most other teas and so due to the lower boiling point at altitude the Yorkshire tea bags brew a much better cup of tea of course like our wine we had to do extensive taste tests!"

So there you have it!

We wonder how many vans like this are en route to the mountains with other provisions to satisfy the British skier?

We wonder if they will be taking any Yorkshire tea to Iran.

GLACIERS TURN PINK & MELT QUICKER

Certain microbes that grow on glaciers and ice sheets can paint the snow pink according to scientists.

Sometimes called watermelon snow, or blood snow, this reddish pigment makes the snow soak up more sunlight as it is darker than the ice and snow.

And it's the red algae that makes it melt faster, data now shows.

We wrote about this phenomenon and some research undertaken by Alaska Pacific University in September #SkiingSecrets (see post dated 27th September 2017).

ED SHEERAN'S 'PERFECT' VIDEO SHOT IN AUSTRIA & IT GOES VIRAL

Sheeran takes to the Austrian ski slopes for his latest music video for the song “Perfect”.

The red bobble hat was the give away for us.....  the video was shot in Hintertux in Austria.

It's a cheesy video that has gone viral with 2.5million hits within a few hours.

By 10pm GMT 'Perfect' had over 4 million views (Update: 24 hours later it had almost 11.5million views).

ALMOST SLEEP-TIME FOR SOME

While many of us are desperate to kick off the ski season, spare a thought for Boo the resident grizzly bear at Kicking Horse Mountain in Canada.

He's had a bit of a surprise as winter has arrived a little earlier than expected.

Watch Boo below, collecting together some bedding for his winter den.

Slowly but surely, Boo has started to make his own bed!  #kickinghorsemtn #thishorserules #exporebc #goldenbc #grizzlybear

AFGHANISTAN TO MAKE HISTORY AT THE WINTER OLYMPICS

It looks like Afghanistan could be making its Winter Olympic debut at PyeongChang after selecting two alpine skiers.

Sayed Alishah Farhang and Sajjad Husaini are expected to compete in the men's giant slalom.

"We wanted to represent Afghanistan in a different way, to show the other countries that Afghanistan is not only war," Husaini is reported as saying to the news agency AFP.

Both skiers could not parallel ski less than three years ago.

They learnt in Bamiyan in Afghanistan but are now training in St Moritz in Switzerland where they became the first Afghans to take part in a World Championships in February.

They made it through the qualifying rounds to compete in the main GS race.

Getting to the Winter Olympics is a major achievement in itself but we should point out that they are unlikely to challenge for the podium in South Korea.

Farhang finished 73rd of 75 skiers in the World Championships GS in a time of 2'52'67, with the winner completing the course in 1'59'06.

Husaini was 74th in 3'09'18.

We love their crowd funding video below, and wish the duo a lot of luck at PyeongChang.

SNOW CANNONS BY NIGHT

Who'd have though images of snow cannons could look so stunning?

The pictures of Obergurgl in the Tirol are from Johannes Brunner of Free perspective media and are on the resort's Facebook page.

LUCKY MASCOTS

Many athletes have superstitions and lucky mascots.

The Paralympic GB skier, Millie Knight is no exception.

And despite being visually impared hers are photographs.

Her Mum Suzanne.

NAKED BURTON MASQUERADES AS NAKED VONN!

Yes! You read that correctly.

The founder of Burton Snowboards, Jake Burton is enjoying a little spat with Olympian and multiple World Cup champion skier Lindsey Vonn.

A year ago, Vonn commented on US radio, “I do like snowboarders but it would be super great if there could be a little separation,” suggesting snowboarders should ride on separate mountains!

And now Jake Burton is retaliating, it seems, with a humourous Halloween jape.

Burton posted some images of himself on Instagram taking on some poses that look remarkably like those adopted by the skier.

He appears dressed in a white, snug fitting lycra race suit with a pair of Head skis looking extremely Vonn-ish, and in another shot he adopts that infamous naked pose, complete with a pair of ski poles and a super-blonde wig for props.

Difficult to tell them apart - well almost! 😎

Scroll left to right through the 4 images below:

Hey Lindsey (Vonn). Happy Halloween. See you at the Olympics. I will be the one with the snowboard. Love, Jake

BODE MILLER TO COMMENTATE AT OLYMPICS

What a shame US ski racer Bode Miller won't be skiing at the next WInter Olympics, instead though he will be commentating on the action for NBC.

Sadly Mr Miller, we'd all prefer to see you skiing.

A GHOULISH WEATHER REPORT

We rather liked the headless presenter in this Halloween weather report.
