The highest altitude resort in Europe has picked up the top prize at the 2017 World Ski Awards.

Val Thorens in Les3Vallees has been named the world's best ski resort for a fourth time.

It's also been named the best in France for the fifth year in the row.

The awards ceremony took place in Kitzbühel at the weekend as VT welcomed its first skiers of the winter onto the slopes.

"Val Thorens holds a special place in skiers' hearts, as demonstrated by them voting for the resort once again this year," the Director of the Tourist Office, Grégory Guzzo said.

" We are very happy, it's the result of a joint effort by a team that's always asking itself how to keep providing our clients with the very best."

The winners were chosen by leaders in the ski tourism industry and hundreds of thousands of ski consumers from around the world.

Val Thorens picked up the majority of the 1.6 million votes for best resort.

"To be recognised by the international ski community and worldwide ski consumers as the number one example of ski tourism excellence is a truly wonderful and inspiring achievement," said Sion Rapson, World Ski Awards Director.

"My admiration goes to the whole team behind Val Thorens' success, and I am so happy that their tireless work and commitment to becoming the very best of the best could be formally rewarded here at the 5th annual World Ski Awards. Huge congratulations!"
