INTERSPORT'S NEW RANGE - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Tuesday November 28, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

The French ski hire chain has four new ski and snowboard packages this winter, promising to stock the best kit available. We've had a preview. NEW

The new rental ranges include one specifically aimed at the teenage market and one for backcountry skiing, including skis, skins, touring boots and collapsible poles.

There's also a Platinum service, giving you access not only to two of the most expensive top-end carving and powder skis but to daily ski servicing too.

And for the first time snowboarders who want serious quality hardware are being catered for with all the new shapes and sizes.

PlanetSKI gave some of the skis a workout this summer in the French glacier resort of Tignes.

I tested three different skis.

The glacier was open only for a few days while I was there in July as a result of poor snow so it meant I could only try each pair for a very short time, but here are the headlines...

Atomic RedstersAtomic Redsters

First up was the piste ski of choice for a lot of us at PlanetSKI.

The Atomic Redsters available in my size were the junior J2 version but they still performed exactly as I'd expect slalom race skis to do despite the (very little snow cover and what there was resembled a Slush Puppy).

I wasn't sure about trying these freestyle twin tips. I'm not exactly a park rat.

I was even more concerned when I discovered that they were the skis used by the 16-year-old GB slopestsyle skier, Tom Greenway, who joined us on the ski tests.

My apprehension was unfounded.

The Atomic Punx are playful in the slush but also carve fast and hard if you want them to.

I loved them and definitely plan to give them another work out sometime this season.

The ones I tested were longer than I would usually have chosen for the conditions.

It was difficult to imagine what they would be like in deep snow but these all-mountain/freestyle skis felt light without suffering from the instability that, in my experience, often comes with long, lightweight skis.

There's no question that all these skis are of exceptional quality and I hope to have the opportunity to try out some others in the 2017-18 range in the course of the winter, ideally in better snow than we had in July.

For the past few years, Intersport has been adding to its range of skis and snowboards to make them gender-neutral.

For every top ski in stock, it aims to have both a male AND female version, or one which is aimed at both sexes.

This season's packages aim to improve its offerings again with the best skis and snowboards it can get its hands on.

The teenage package:

Three top-end skis, one for freeride, one for freestyle and and one for piste carving.

The backcountry package:

Touring skis with new pin bindings, skins, collapsible poles and touring boots are all included in the rental.

The snowboard package:

The big mainstream rental shops have traditionally not catered for serious snowboarders.

Intersport wants to change that and is adding new snowboard shapes, including shorter, wider boards.

The Nitro Quiver range is its prime offering this winter.

The BBC's snowboard correspondent and presenter of Ski Sunday, Ed Leigh, got a taste of the Nitros this summer and PlanetSKI's Katie Bamber will be trying out Intersport's snowboard range this winter.

The platinum package

Like the gold package Intersport has with the best skis on the market, but with a difference.

With the platinum package you get to try Rossignol Strato and Black Crow Daemon skis AND have your own ski tehnician.

You can leave your skis at the shop every night to be serviced.

Hot wax, cold wax? Skied over a rock and in need of a Ptex repair?

Your personal technician will sort it while you sleep.

PlanetSKI is a great fan of hiring skis in resort.

Generally the team here think it's best to spend your money buying good, well-fitting boots rather than skis.

It can be cost-effective when you take into account the price of taking your own skis or boards on many airlines.

But mostly, we like the convenience.

No lugging heavy ski bags, no chance of taking the wrong type of ski for the conditions - assuming you have more than one pair, that is - and no additional servicing costs.

Intersport says the average cost of an off-peak ski rental package last season worked out at just over 8 Euros a day.

You'll pay more than that for the top-end packages and in the peak holiday season but, in our view, renting skis these days is well worth it.

As you can see from the photo above, the Tignes testing team was made up of some snowsports athletes who really know their stuff (and a PlanetSKI rookie).

Jane was joined by freestyle skier Tom Greenway, Ed Leigh and ex-GB alpine racer and Olympian, Ed Drake.
