Verbier saw an avalanche of merry Santas at the weekend, and this year there was a record number. NEW & UPDATED

The event snowballed this year with a total of 2,656 Santas taking to the slopes.

A Santa express train was laid on to get them to and from the resort on the rail network, plus all red-robed guests had free access to the ski lifts.

Thousands of men and women arrived in Le Châble on Saturday morning, the railway station at the bottom of the mountain, and made their way up to Verbier to enjoy their day.

The snow conditions were pretty fabulous... see what they had to put up with in the video below:

The proviso was that anyone taking part had to dress in red.

Red bobble hats were optional, but they had to look like Santa or Mrs Claus.

PlanetSKI's Verbier reporter, Catie Friend was also there as chief announcer for both the French and English-speaking skiers.

She was wearing a green elf-hat - not strictly part of the red brigade she nevertheless filed an album of photos and a library of videos, see some of them below.

Well done to Verbier for attracting such a high number to their slopes this year, but they still have a long way to go to beat the Guinness World Record.

Back in 2014 the record for the largest gathering of Santa Clauses was a staggering 18,112.

It was a charity fundraising event organised by Thrissur Citizenry and Thrissur Archdiocese in Kerala in India on 27th December 2014.

Catie took some short video clips of the red-robed santas bopping in an Apres Ski bar on the ski slopes.

We're not sure if this is the full quota of Santas posing in Verbier's official photo below, it certainly is an impressive Santa turn out.

While we've been putting together this short piece, we've been struggling to find the collective noun for a group of Santas!

If you have any good ideas, or know the definitive word, then please let us know.

A 'Ho, Ho Ho' perhaps...

And they weren't the only skiing and snowboarding Santas out shredding at the weekend.

250 turned out for the 18th annual Santa event at Sunday River ski resort in Maine, USA.

They raised $2,500 for the Sunday River Community Fund, which benefits groups in the area.
