THIRD TIME LUCKY? - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Monday December 4, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

GB Ski Cross racer, Emily Sarsfield, goes into the World Cup season aiming to get to a Winter Olympics at the third attempt. She's been speaking to PlanetSKI.

The first of this winter's elite Ski Cross competitions takes place in Val Thorens in France from Thursday 7th to Saturday 9th December.

It's a chance for the self-funded athlete -  Britain's leading Ski Cross racer - to see how close she can get to the top 10 in the world ahead of the Pyeongchang Games in February.

At the end of November Sarsfield finished 12th and 15th in Europa Cup races in Austria.

"All the dry land preparations are done and I'm ready for racing 💪! " she posted on Instagram on Sunday 3rd December, before heading to the Alps.

Ski Cross sees skiers - usually four at a time - race side by side on a banked course with jumps.

It had its debut at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics in 2010 but a serious knee injury meant Sarsfield didn't make it.

Four years later she was denied a place at Sochi by the GB selectors, despite an invitation by the International Ski Federation.

She then spent almost two years out of competition after having her knee rebuilt.

Sarsfield is 34, so making it to Pyeongchang has added importance.

For the first time she has the benefit of a coach, Guillaume Nantermod, who was appointed earlier this year by British Ski and Snowboard to look after GB's Ski and Snowboard Cross team.

She's been speaking to PlanetSKI.

The Val Thorens World Cup this week is the opening event of the 2017 Cross Alps Tour - six competitions at four resorts over two weeks in December.

The six events represent half of all World Cup points up for grabs this season.
