The Diary: Some dates and events not to miss in the Austrian Tirol this winter: NEW

 

 

 

It's a packed schedule from January to April.

If we could spend the season roaming the Tirol from event to event, we would.

Maybe we should...

From the new year onwards, first up is:

Four Hills Tournament in Innsbruck

3rd - 4th January, 2018

The third round of the traditional Four Hills Tournament will see the world's top ski jumpers gather at the Bergisel ski jump in Innsbruck.

Nine days, four sites, two countries: Germany and Austria.

The jump is 50m high and 90m long and really is an ace spectator event.

PillerseeTal sled dog camp and races 

6th - 21st January, 2018

'It's a dog's (and musher's) life at the sled dog camp and races in PillerseeTal.'

A four-day event where visitors can learn the life and craft of wild-sled running as well as meeting the mushers and their dogs.

Dog-sleigh rides, igloo building and campfire hangouts are on the programme.

A three-day Adventure Husky course is on offer to mush with the experts.

The course costs from €289pp (two sharing) and includes four nights' accommodation, three-day mushing course for beginners and some meals.

Snow Polo World Cup in Kitzbühel

11th - 14th January, 2018

Every January, the world's top polo players and many more polo fans come together for the biggest polo-on-snow tournament.

This year is the 16th edition and the competition will kick off on Friday12th January, and the last race ends at 2pm on Sunday 14th.

The Zur Tenne Hotel in the village centre is where to be to catch the world's best players battle it out at the Münichau Meadow.

VIP tickets are available to purchase and cost from €200pp.

International Tannheimer Tal Valley Balloon Festival in Tanheim

12th - 28th January, 2018

Watch hot air balloons float peacefully over the mountains and through the valleys over three weeks.

It's the 23rd year of this event.

Witness 'lift off', jump into a basket yourself and get the best views of the Alps, check out the contraptions up close at the weekly 'Balloon Glows'...

78th Hahnenkamm - Men's Downhill in Kitzbühel

14th - 21st January, 2018

Considered the most challenging race course on the World Cup circuit, the famous Hahnenkamm draws to Kitzbühel the world's best skiers.

As well as thousands of spectators...

Outdoor multimedia dance show performed by Enrique Gasa Valga in Stubai

1st February, 2018


Dance performance 'Gaia Stubai - Mother Earth' will show at the Neuland open-air arena on 1st February.

This will be its second year running and will take place in Neustift/Milders.

The outdoor event combines dance, music, freestyle skiing, light, multimedia installations and 3D mapping.

Tickets cost €45 for adults and €9 for children under 15. Children under 10 go free.

Streif Vertical Up in Kitzbühel

24th February, 2018

The 'Super Bowl of Skiing'.

But in reverse...

The Streif Vertical Up sees competitors powering up the World Cup run - 860-metres of it.

It's a night race and the many competitors climb the vertical any way they like; cross-country skis, spike...

Join in with the fun Backpack Event or the challenging Speed Event.

Registration costs from €39pp.

Freeride World Tour in Fieberbrunn

9th - 15th March, 2018

The World's premier freeride skiers will return to Fieberbrunn when the Swatch Freeride World tour returns to PillerseeTal Valley in March 2018.

It's one of the world's greatest events to watch (in our opinion...).

Skiers ride down the summit of the Wildseeloder Mountain, descending 620m with a gradient of up to 70 degrees.

It'll be the fourth stop of the tour and will see the freeriders battle it for who goes forward to the grand finale in Verbier.

Electric Mountain Festival, Sölden

5th - 6th April, 2018

The electric dance music scene comes to Ötztal:

Two days of music in the mountains with snow and skiing to mark the end of the season.

And admission to the concerts is already included in a day's ski pass.

Snowbombing - Mayrhofen

9th - 14th April, 2018

Famous for its adrenaline-fuelled snowboarding and crazy partying, the annual Snowbombing festival will take over the resort of Mayrhofen in the Zillertal Alps, with leading DJs, club nights and live acts performing.

Think igloo raves, enchanted forest parties and underground tennis-club-turned-supper clubs, all at 8,497 ft.

The 2018 line-up is yet to be announced, but past acts comprise Rudimental, Chase & Status and Carl Cox.

A five-night stay, from 8 April 2018, is priced from £389 pp and includes a festival wristband and five nights' B&B accommodation.

The White Thrill, St Anton Am Arlberg

21st April, 2018

White Thrill heats up as the lifts close.

A 'cult-ski race' with over 550 participants: A 9-kilometre run at an altitude of 1,300m.

The 'Pain Mountain' section includes a 150-metre ascent that required 'high levels of dexterity' - Intrigued?

Ischgl - Top of the Mountain Concert

30th April, 2018

Following tradition, Ischgl will again host the notorious Top of the Mountain Concert.

Huge names have performed over the years and this year German star, Helene Fischer will headline.
