The announcement was made during talks between North & South Korea. It's seen as a major breakthrough. UPDATED

They are the first face to face talks between North and South for two years and took place on Tuesday at the Peace House in Panmunjeom that is located in the demilitarised zone.

The delegation from North Korea will include athletes, officials and supporters.

South Korea has also suggested holding family reunions during the Winter Olympics for people separated by the Korean War.

Relations eased in recent days following a New Year Day speech by Kim Jong-un where he said  North Korea hoped to compete at Pyeongchang 2018.

North Korea's agreement to the talks came hours after South Korea and the United States agreed to halt joint military exercises during the Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

The political situation in the peninsular has overshadowed the build up to the Games with countries looking at the security considerations for their athletes and supporters should hostilities break out.

The US is said to have advanced plans to evacuate US athletes and citizens should it be necessary.

The only two North Korean athletes who have qualified for the Games are figure skaters Ryom Tae-Ok and Kim Ju-Sik.

They missed a deadline last month to accept their spot, although they will now be allowed to participate once the formalities have been arranged.
There may be possible wild-card entries, perhaps in short-track speed skating and Nordic skiing, but this has not been confirmed.

North Korea has participated in the Olympics before, but not in South Korea.

It boycotted the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.
