SNOW IN THE SAHARA
Thursday January 11, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

Do not adjust your screens, this is not a mirage. Look at these amazing photos from the desert. NEW

While large swathes of Europe have been ravaged by recent snowstorms, it seems the Sahara Desert has been affected too.

The freak storm hit Algeria on the morning of Sunday January 7th, dumping around 40cm (16 inches) of snow at one point.

With temperatures hovering around 1ºC the residents of Aïn Séfra went sliding down the sandunes, not on sand but on the snow.

Sekkouri Kamel, who grew up in the Aïn Séfra area, northwest Algeria, said he had only seen snow there five times in the past 40 years.

Despite the fact that it can get very cold at night, snowfall is very rare in the Sahara Desert as there is rarely enough water for any kind of precipitation.

The videos below were posted by Hamouda Ben Jerad of Aïn Séfra.

And whilst we are commenting on snow in north Africa, there's been snow in Morocco too.

Higher up in the Altas Mountains, where one does expect snow, conditions look remarkable.
